Coast to Coast

A data visualization in the form of 3D printed coasters

creative coding, data, 3d

Using alcohol sales data from the Canadian provinces, I generated a set of disfunctional coasters.

Intended as a joke item, each coaster represents one province or territory—the higher the alcohol sales per capita, the less even the surface of the coaster, and therefore the less stable the drink resting on top. The rows of lines represent different beverages, over a period of 20 years. All in Processing, I created a 2D greyscale visualization of the data, and used this as a heightmap to create a 3D object, which was then exported to STL. The coasters were printed on a Makerbot.
